The Sailing Club has a really good website that is 20 years old
It uses Ruby On Rails
The server crashed
Getting Ruby On Rails on a Web package suitable for a Sailing club is a challenge.
So can the Ruby On Rails be replaced by PHP ?
Taxidermy the web site - take the look and feel and replace the webserver , ruby and rails with PHP and use Appache on the server on a typical hosting package.
Try and keep the database schema the same.
So the Ruby bit crashed. The Cron Jobs mean there is a decent recent back up of the database.
PHP can be used to access the database.
Download PHP, and MariaDB to a Windows PC .
PHP has a built in developement Web Server, and MariaDB has a really good DB tool called HeidiSQL. It is better than PHPadmin as it stores queries.
The Website is good. Finding a Sailing Club member who can understand the Ruby On Rails has proved a challenge.
Ruby On Rails - "You’re in good company. Over the past two decades, Rails has taken countless companies to millions of users and billions in market valuations."
We're a friendly sailing club based on the east coast of England, near Ipswich (Suffolk). Our location offers a superb variety of sailing in the sheltered rivers and estuaries of the Suffolk and Essex coastlines and offers ready access to the open sea beyond Felixstowe for passages to other areas of the UK and Europe.
Our club aims to promote sailing activities and a social community around it.
Our club owns three dinghies and our yacht Samos.
Practical training sessions for the yacht and dingies are held throughout the season. Our training programme is aligned to RYA.
To skipper our club yacht members, go through a club syllabus with assessments as well as having to achieve RYA qualifications.
Our club has contacts with local RYA instructors who offer the courses required as part of our syllabus.
A great variety of sailing (both dinghies and yacht) is arranged throughout the season including races, rallies and social sails. In addition, independent sailing is possible via private sessions by qualified helms/skippers.
The yacht is also used for Club summer cruises, which over the years have taken us to the Baltic, continental Europe, the Channel Islands and the Scilly Isles.
We actively network with other clubs and yacht owners which leads to other sailing opportunities.
Social Events are arranged, which allow us to share our sailing tales and experiences over a meal and a drink.
Our members are expected to help with club organisation and boat maintenance which keeps our costs down.
So Club members , so with technicals skills used in thier day job have contributed over the years.
One chap used PERL
The Sailing club website has provided a super learning opportunity.
Leaning about Webhosting helps with the daya job.
